The reason why they would remember would be from the soul that we sold off to them in genocide. We play the game as usual and nothing is different except for the endings because Chara remembers. Till then, everything is under our control. They should not have the power to possess Frisk and destroy everthing unless we give them the power to via a genocide run. When we reset, Chara's LOVE is set back to zero. Only when we do reach a LOVE of 20 does have Chara the ability to destroy the world. How I see it is that Chara needs to reach a LOVE of 20 to really do anything.

If you consider it possible to "quit" at any point, I feel the best point to quit at would be post-saving Asriel, pre-returning to above ground. The "happiest" ending would be another Genocide Run whatever you say about killing everyone, at least it's honest in regards to your motivation. Once you decide you're done, either by quitting or by reaching an ending, I think the most canonical thing to happen would be he'd finish the run as normal and kill the people he used to get out. It tries to reward the former and punish the latter, in order to make you enjoy the "game" part of the game, and stop worrying about the more "meta" part of it.Īlong that line of thinking, then: -Chara doesn't need you to do anything, he's just letting you run through the game because that's apparently what makes you happy. I think one of the major points that Undertale tries to make is that when you treat the game (any game) like an experience, it's an experience, and likewise when you treat the game like an exercise in completionism, it becomes a chore. All Chara's doing is reminding you that at the end of the day, you're still the same obsessive jerk that would do a Genocide Run. The goal is more that you get to get your jollies off pretending you're friends with everyone.

It's not so much that Chara can't possess you at a moment's notice, he totally could. What do you think is the "happiest" ending you can achieve without a SOUL? What is the latest point in the game where you can die, having done the most good possible? Is it possible to die after saving Asriel? Do you think Chara needs you to get to the surface before they can take control? If so, why? Therefore, if I make it most of the way back through a True Pacifist Route, then choose to kill myself and never open the game again ("let this world continue on without me"), would that prevent Chara from hurting everybody? My question is, why couldn't Chara do this sooner? Why not possess Frisk the moment they reset the world, and do a genocide run? This leads me to suspect that Chara might not be able to take control until you reach the surface, although why that might be I can't determine. We know (suspect) that if you make it to the surface without a SOUL, Chara will possess your body and murder your friends. But what I'm wondering is, is there any way to save Frisk's monster friends now? Frisk killed the world, and that has consequences. No, I don't mean going back to the old, happy ending.
